Explore the Gardens
The NDSU Horticulture Research and Demonstration Gardens are a hidden gem. Many people assume the garden is off limits because it is part of the university. However, it is open to the public during the growing season and its beauty is meant to be enjoyed. The garden serves to foster plant research and public outreach. Research trials take place within the garden for the purpose of trialing annual and perennial flowers. Relevant research results are then conveyed to the public through summer events and tours.
To the west of the main garden, is the best kept secret in the region. NDSU is home to the largest public collection of daylilies in the United States. Numbering over 2000 cultivars, the collection is a dazzling array of colors and forms. Mid-July to early August is the best time to visit the daylily gardens.
